Biography

Roberta Coni graduated in 1999 from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, specializing in painting. In 1997 she won a scholarship for the Study Project Erasmus and therefore attended her third year of the Academy at the Faculty of Fine Arts Alonso Cano of Granada, Spain. In 2005-2006 she won the study scholarship through the Rotary International for the Academy of Art University of San Fransisco, California USA. Her productions have always focused on the study of the human figure located in the facial expression and the human gaze. Characteristic elements of the strong realism expressed in her works highlight the facial skin and the reflections of the look of the female figures that emerge from the shadows, the artist combines the classic techniques of oil to full-bodied and mixed media. The choice of using a large canvas, in which most of the space is occupied by a subject’s face reinforces the expressiveness of the model and lingers on the skin and on the attention of the viewer’s eyes.

The eye, the gaze, the intensity and its reflection, become a moment of transition to a more profound reading and contemplation of the works of the artist. Helped by touches of the brush that make the picture’s surface alive and pulsating, the details of the faces aid to see the soul of the model, and feel a deep introspection and empathy towards them.

Her artistic style, founded on culture and tradition is also open to new technologies, due to the video input – always part of her polyptych projects –and by this, her practice can be inserted in the centre of contemporary artistic culture.
