On the fortieth anniversary of his first solo exhibition in 1985, artist Roberto Floreani returns to exhibit in Rome at Galleria Russo, following his previous shows there in 2014 and 2018. On this occasion, the selection of works focuses on the recent series Constellations, a complement to Thresholds—both being current expressions of the artist’s research that also characterize “The Jubilee Exhibition” at the Diocesan Museum of Vicenza (running through June 8), so named by the press since its opening on March 8.
Alongside the site-specific Constellations, presented in various formats, a specially designed carpet will also be displayed, serving a specific purpose as an installation piece within an environmental artwork.
Like the Thresholds, the Constellations explore the historical relationship between Abstraction and spirituality, echoing the artist’s belief that an artwork can serve as a potential vehicle for a spiritual message. Specifically, while the Thresholds investigate inner experience through a spiritual lens, the Constellations evoke the undefined through a scientific lens, where the immeasurable distances of the cosmos express a disorienting encounter with the infinite. These works are marked by Floreani’s distinctive painting technique, which features a complex layering of earthy textures combined with the Concentric—a signature element of the artist since 2003—and a vibrant interplay of colors. A kind of ascension from Chaos to Cosmos, as brilliantly described by Davide Brullo in an in-depth interview published in the cultural magazine Pangea in 2021.
